And she was shocked. [2] The psychologist testified that she had seen both mother and daughter during 2007 and 2008. She was diagnosed with post-concussion syndrome and released after three weeks. My life is over, Im in the hospital, Im at rock bottom. And it was also the community was kind of divided. Mhmm. Penn's admissions department thus automatically coded Fierceton as a first-generation student, a category it was seeking to increase among its undergraduate population, even though her mother had an advanced degree[2] and her grandfather was a college graduate who had taught at the University of Missouri. And we do know for sure that she was in touch with the university. Yes, it may be true that institutions like UPenn give students like Fierceton opportunities because of their story, but that does not mean her narrative is theirs for the taking. She had seen no signs of abuse in the relationship and considered Fierceton to be the dominant personality in it. In the presence of her mother that night at their house, Mackenzie repeated the same story to a visiting caseworker, who appeared to accept it. And then to be so unanimously disbelieved and, at that point, this article was like a paragraph and a half. RG: And that feels like one of them where it feels like the system is willfully misunderstanding reality in order to bend it in their direction. And so youre becoming rather inconvenient to the university at that point , I would assume, which plays into the way that universities and elite structures think of diversity, I think. But her mother wasnt finished with her. But it was definitely something I saw happening sort of this funneling of kids from the child welfare to criminal justice system. But in this application they had two questions which are to determine financial aid. RG: Is that what sent you into a surreal state? Fierceton's mother's supporters have maintained that her daughter was an emotionally manipulative girl who injured herself and fabricated other aspects of the abuse in order to become a more appealing candidate for admission to an Ivy League college such as the University of Pennsylvania. And then very quickly turn to very specific questions about different instances of abuse. Fierceton described herself as a first-generation college applicant who came from a low-income, foster-care background. "While it is possible that [she] was the cause of the alleged injuries," she wrote a month afterward, "the court cannot make that finding by a preponderance of the evidence based on the evidence presented." I think its a reflection of the systemic prejudices . [3], After the interview White emailed Morrison about how it went; she wrote back regretting that Fierceton continued to tell the same story. In the lawsuit filed on Dec. 21, Fierceton, a 2021 School of Social Policy . RG: And so when you applied for your masters in social worker or sociology? And its striking to see just the continuing to push of what happened. There was, yes, disagreement, because I said there was blood in my hair in the essay, they said there wasnt enough blood or there wasnt blood or something. RG: Thats been my understanding of it. I have some of my own theories, but I want to hear yours. But it was just kind of this rapid fire of: If we look at your medical records, are we going to see you had broken ribs and severe facial injuries? RG: Talk just a little bit about that case . [2], In the early 2000s the couple went through a protracted divorce during which a guardian ad litem was appointed to represent their daughter's interests at the custody hearing. She, about 10 years ago, she wrote a comment I think on a Gawker post or something like that that we ended up then re-publishing as an essay at The Huffington Post about, and it was about her life in poverty, and it went viral, millions of people read it, extremely well-written piece. So it makes some sense that they were very similar questions. And so was it later, in a different conversation where they asked about the line in the essay about not being able to recognize yourself or is there some illusion to that in the transcript that you found? [2], For her senior year, Whitfield gave Fierceton a full scholarship. RG: That was Mackenzie Fierceton and thats our show. Her mother had no explanation for the injuries, other than saying perhaps she had done it to herself. So I felt pretty confident. A picture of her was posted at the nurse's station should she make the attempt. At Norton's request, a fellow political science colleague, Rogers Smith, who while at Yale had chaired that university's undergraduate disciplinary committee, agreed to represent Fierceton during what he called "a very unusual process". [2], Fierceton remained in the hospital, where DSS ordered her placed in protective custody. Right. As youve had time to sort through this, what do you think was driving Penn to go through this process, which they had to know, at some level, would cost them? RG: And do you know Linda Tirado? Whereas white parents, a lot of times, it is much harder the bar is much higher to remove them from their homes because their whiteness or possibly class privilege or whatever identities that they have that might not fit a social worker or judges or whoevers involved perception of whose kids should be in the foster system. How much research has been done on the foster-care-to-prison-pipeline? We want to think of it as: If you were ever rich, youre always rich; if youre ever poor, youre always poor. Even though I had, again, written statements from two ICU nurses who took care of me saying: Yes, there was blood, [laughs] theres photographs, and there still was the argument of like, there wasnt enough blood or your face wasnt so distorted you could couldnt tell who you were. Penn's Office of Student Conduct recommended withholding her master's degree until she paid a fine; both conditions were dropped but a notation about the investigative finding remains in her transcript. They took photographs of Caster's staircases and elevators, and interviewed witnesses and some of the Penn paramedics who had responded. So those questions really came later. We started building this, and this is exactly who we built it for. But I think a lot of it stems from the current policies and practices of federal and local funding and what kind of programs theyre funding for kids. She was . She told them she felt that would be more likely to get an unbiased answer that way. [2] Fierceton and her mentor reconstructed the conversation and transcribed it; the university has claimed it is inaccurate but the mentor stands by it. Penn, by questioning so much of Fierceton's story, was making itself "complicit in a long campaign of continuing abuse", she added. One of them, to me, felt pretty clear that it was probably from someone in my biological family, because it had photos of me; it had very specific information that very few people would have and I dont think many people would have random childhood photos of me. [23] In mid-April, Penn released Fierceton's master's degree. There was, yes, disagreement, because I said there was blood in my hair in the essay, they said there wasnt enough blood or there wasnt blood or something. And how much did she challenge your medical condition after that beating? "[27], For the Penn investigation, Fierceton relied on the definition on the webpage for Penn First Plus, the university's support program for FGLI students, which includes the language about the student having a "strained or limited relationship" with the graduate parent. And back in high school, it was a similar thing. But Mackenzie Fierceton is not a liar. [Laughs.]. And it started with, this paragraph-and-a-half of waking up in the hospital and then, like you said, looking at my face, not recognizing myself, and kind of describing what I felt like and what the room looked like. And in the U.S., there is much more pressure to pull kids out of homes, right? How old were you when you were applying to college? And all of us, no matter what our situation, are not completely safe from it. And Im glad that people are having the kinds of systemic discussions that are so key to all of this. Have you ever heard of her case? In its response to Fierceton's lawsuit, the university says its general counsel talked with Hayes, who said that bringing the charges had been the "biggest mistake" of his career. And youre getting instruction from a university official that that's how you're supposed to fill it out, that's what the definition says online. Photograph by Robbie Lawrence for The New Yorker Mackenzie Fierceton grew up in a middle-class suburb of St. Louis. As an anonymous letter writer revealed, however, she was also the privately educated child of a radiologist, brought up in an affluent suburb. Logan filed her wrongful death suit in August 2020, alleging Penn was negligently responsible for her husband's death through failing to make Caster properly accessible and not making SP2 develop an emergency response protocol. Enough bruises? That was Mackenzie Fierceton and thats our show. In The New Yorker article, one teacher had written: She showed up at my classroom door with a bloodied and battered face and then fainted., RG: And then, Rachel Aviv, the reporter also quotes Sherry McClain, who was a nurse who was assigned to you, she said: She had two black eyes, and her hair was full of blood. [9] In a news release, Penn's then-president Amy Gutmann, a daughter of Jewish refugees from Nazi Germany who had herself been the first in her family to attend college,[11] spoke admiringly of Fierceton as "a first-generation low-income student and a former foster youth. And then the other question was: Are you the first in your family to attend college? I said were almost done. Penn has released its hold on a master of social work degree from Mackenzie Fierceton the former Rhodes Scholarship recipient who filed a lawsuit against the University following its investigation into allegations that she falsified her status as a first-generation, low-income student and survivor of abuse. So Rachel had it and Penn disputed it. Or whatever our kind of contemporary version of it is. [2], In March 2014, Fierceton began keeping a secret diary[a] documenting her life and her ruminations on her situation, writing it in her bedroom closet by the light of her phone and hiding it behind a ventilation panel. And thats actually one of the things that, if there was any doubt whatsoever about this story, in some ways it was settled by that. So, yes. Right. on about your day, ask yourself: How likely is it that the story you just read would have been produced by a different news outlet if The Intercept hadnt done it? [22] It went into greater detail about her past, providing more substantiation for her abuse allegations from teachers, fellow students and their parents, Carrie Brandt (the police detective who had investigated and arrested Morrison) and her allegations that Morrison had enabled Lovelace's sexual abuse. Theres a lot of chaos. What about Rhodes? [3], Before that happened, Fierceton withdrew from the scholarship on her own. And so can you talk a little bit about your research? Because Im not under any illusion that Im the typical foster kid. Now Im sobbing, Im hyperventilating, and the staff member interrupted and said: Can we have an estimate of how much time is left? Her mentor told Licht afterwards that "it felt like an attack on a student" and that she had never experienced anything like it. RG: Penn didnt respond to a request for comment, but in its response to Mackenzies lawsuit, they write: Penn denies that there are accessibility problems with the Caster Building which contributed to Mackenzies medical emergency or to [Cameron] Drivers death. And so was it later, in a different conversation where they asked about the line in the essay about not being able to recognize yourself or is there some illusion to that in the transcript that you found? Are we going to see these injuries? In any event, The University of Oxford, where Mackenzies doing her Ph.D., has remained supportive, and in the wake of The New Yorker investigation, and the resulting protests from students and faculty, Penn lifted the hold on her degree. Later in the year she wrote online that the name change gave her "ownership of her identity" and a sense of agency she had not had before in her life. One home, during her junior year of high school, was so "toxic" and crammed with other foster kids that she left for weeks at a time, sleeping each night on a carousel of couches at the homes of various friends, she said. And is it somewhat of a defense mechanism that people deploy to protect themselves? I n November 2020, University of Pennsylvania graduate student Mackenzie Fierceton, 24, won the Rhodes Scholarship to study at Oxford University. And then the focus shifted to the second box. [19] The New York Post wrote that "[t]he case exposes the murky underbelly of elite schools like Penn. Its virtually almost an unknown phenomena or to people who are working in the field, its certainly known, but theres been very little research on it, which partially complicates my Ph.D., because theres so little to draw upon. She expressed some concern to Penn staff that if she won, the media attention might incite her mother and her family to attack her reputation, and expressed on a form she filed with Penn as part of the process a concern of hers that FGLI students such as herself were "pressured to be someone they were not amidst their application process." And theres also literature thats economic literature versus sociology, different fields have different perspectives on what that relationship between foster care and the criminal justice system is and what the causes are. The prosecutor eventually dropped the charges and the arrest record was expunged. And I dont remember all of the questions, but it was a really intense, rapid fire of really difficult and challenging questions. And they were the ones I believe and this is public now because Penn attached it to their response to the lawsuit I filed and I believe they were the first ones to mention that I had gone to private school and that they were questioning if I was low-income. She shared with the former screenshots of online chats and printouts of emails with representatives of the, The Rhodes Trust report found that the Penn police had no records of any calls to them from Fierceton about this. At first she went to a friend's home in Ohio and then returned to the Philadelphia area as May and graduation approached to live with a classmate's family. Mackenzie Fierceton is the child of a doctor who attended a private prep school in a wealthy suburb. The kind of reporting we do is essential to democracy, but it is not easy, cheap, or profitable. "[2][j], The evening the story ran, Ruderman called Fierceton back and told her she had received some anonymously written emails casting doubt on what she had written. RG: That they would forward charges to the federal government of wire fraud. It recommended the scholarship be rescinded. She had bruises all over her body in different stages of healing an obvious sign of child abuse.. After Fierceton was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship during her senior year, questions about whether she had accurately represented her background led to investigations by both the Rhodes Trust and Penn that concluded she had at times suggested or failed to correct the impression left by some statements about her, and her own application essays, that she had grown up a poor foster child. She considered the advantages and disadvantages of reporting her mother, but ultimately feared she might not even be believed, as her mother would tell people she was mentally ill or lying. Mackenzie went to a private prep school, Whitfield, in St. Louis and was an active student. And even now, The New Yorker quotes a lot from my childhood journals describing my abuse. woman who won a coveted scholarship in the US to study at Oxford after claiming she was poor, overcame childhood abuse and grew up in foster care lost the opportunity after it emerged she was. And I asked again and just said: Ive had different experiences of harassment for the last four years at Penn. [2], A week later, Fierceton received an email asking her to attend a meeting over Zoom with Winkelstein. Is it as well explored territory as a school-to-prison pipeline? Mackenzie Morrison was born Mackenzie Terrell but took her mother's name after her father, Billy Terrell, who worked in soap operas, left. RG: I want to talk about where you think that pushback came from. If we review your medical records, are we going to see you had broken ribs and facial injuries? So that was what that specific sentence in The New Yorker was referencing is this kind of condensing this group of people and to one sentence. What happened the night before? Period." The reporter had assumed based on her status as a FGLI student which stands for first-generation, low-income that she had been poor her entire life. The notation in her transcript remains. And I was the one who uncovered my classmates death. OSC referred the recommendation to an SP2 panel to make a final determination; she has subsequently appealed the decision. And it became pretty clear to me that they had spoken to Carrie and or seen medical records. I tried to help as much as I could. Or is that it separates two into one? In May 2022, after a lengthy article in The New Yorker drew widespread media attention to Fierceton's story, the university dropped the charge and awarded her the degree. I think they do have a richer experience if they have more diversity around them, but that is more the point. 2020 College graduate Mackenzie Fierceton (Photo from Mackenzie Fierceton). And now they have to face the fact that someone who looks like them, who shares all these identities with them, could be the source of all of this harm. She helped SP2 assistant professor Toorjo Ghose draft and promote a petition in support of Police Free Penn, an activist group calling on the university to cut its ties with the Philadelphia Police Department over its poor relations with the largely black and Latin residents of the West Philadelphia neighborhoods around the university's campus, and rethink its own police department, the largest private one in the state. That they would forward charges to the federal government of wire fraud. In other words, if you are parent who says that you are wishing your daughter well and youre telling the authorities that shes just mentally ill and its just a really, really sad and tragic case that shes making up all of these allegations of abuse and throwing herself down stairs, and beating herself up all for cries for help, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera you wouldnt then also pursue a multi-year long effort to destroy her life. And because you were not just low-income, actually no income, other than the jobs that you were working nobody has complained about the low-income one, right? The mother of a friend of Fierceton's recalls that when she told Morrison on the phone that she "was not interested" in hearing what Morrison had to say, she got angry and confrontational. How long were you in the hospital? Because that was one of the ones that really blew my mind. She thought that he had been very quickly removed from the building. And eventually they filed a big wrongful death lawsuit in August 2020. It, too, alleged that Fierceton was misrepresenting herself as having been poor and grown up entirely in foster care, with many photos of Fierceton as a little girl on the beach and riding horses, and other activities usually associated with affluence. And please go and leave us a rating or a review it helps people find the show. who was, I believe now, the acting provost. Its a very different lifestyle. Cause Ive just wanted to go on with my life and, you know, live it. I cant remember if it was in the Rhodes essay or in another essay that, in hindsight, you wouldve tightened up. RG: So one of the questions that you mentioned that they asked was about your essay , RG: which, correct me if Im wrong, but I think it begins saying something along the lines of: Youre in the hospital, you looked in the mirror, and you couldnt recognize yourself, you couldnt recognize your features. [5] She posted it before Fierceton's release from the hospital, and once free began calling Fierceton's friends and former teachers, telling them that Fierceton was having issues and had made it appear Morrison had beaten her. And they released this quote-unquote report in April of 2021 with their findings. So Im not sure how much could have been missing. "She lies better than I can tell the truth. So you applied for your masters in social work and there was a question of whether to check the, what Ive learned is called the FGLI box: first-generation, low-income. [2], Shortly after the Rhodes investigation began, Rafaelle was informed that Penn was proposing to revoke Fierceton's bachelors on the grounds of her apparent self-misrepresentation. The University of Pennsylvania on Tuesday announced it will stop withholding a master's degree from Mackenzie Fierceton, the former student at the center of a recent New Yorker magazine. "She was falling apart under the academic stresses at school and was exhausted, and I believe looking for an out." This made Fierceton feel as if she were being watched for anything she did that could be used against the state's case by her mother. How many people kind of fit that category that you interacted with, and how many kind of fit closer to your category, not just in your own interactions, but also in your research? The battle between her and the school was chronicled by Rachel Aviv in the New Yorker earlier this month. I wrote a poem about the actual what the message was, which is so cheesy and Im cringing at my 17-year-old self [laughs], but it was about the healing power of gratitude. So therefore that doesnt fit their understanding of low-income, despite the fact that your mother was no longer your legal guardian, youre a ward of the state. And what was the first-generation community like on campus? She bounced from one foster home to the next. When asked what she might have done differently, Fierceton told the Chronicle that while she had at some points wished she had never applied to Penn, and later considered rephrasing some of the things she wrote on her essays and applications, "[w]here I've landed is that I have a right to write about my experiences as I experienced them.
